Capability and Performance
Have you ever been in a situation (work or otherwise) where you have felt concerned about the challenges ahead or the difficulties associated with a particular piece of work?
- What were you thinking at that time?
- How did this way of thinking make you feel?
- What was the impact of these thoughts and feelings on your behaviour?
You were probably focusing on the difficulties and the challenges associated with the task, and you were probably feeling very anxious, a little stressed, nervous or concerned about what might happen. This in no doubt would have influenced your behaviour and performance.
Often the challenges and difficulties we face can motivate us to perform at the highest level. On other occasions our views about these challenges can create barriers and impact on our performance. This way of thinking is largely influenced by what we call perceptions of capability – whether or not an individual, team, organisation or nation believes they can perform with the knowledge or skills (or competencies) they possess.
When individuals/teams/organisations feel capable:
-
they perform at the highest level
-
they put more effort into achieving their goals and objectives
-
they are more persistent and resilient in the face of challenge
-
they are more innovative and creative
-
they are more efficient
When individuals/teams/organisations do not feel capable:
-
they do not perform to the best of the ability
-
they tend to give up in the face of challenge and adversity
-
they are less resilient
-
they are more likely to suffer problems of stress, anxiety and burnout
-
they are more likey to suffer problems of absence
-
they are less satisfied and committed
