Stress and Health
Stress is arguably one of the most commonly misused words in the contemporary English language! How many times do we hear of someone being ‘stressed out’, or perhaps feel that way ourselves? Here stress is a matter of what is happening to us or, more precisely, inside us. It is a matter of our reaction and response to the events, situations and circumstances that we have to try and cope with. But what of the occasions that perhaps we – or others – complain of being ‘under so much stress’? This is a different ‘take’ on stress, because here stress is less a matter of our physical and psychological response to events and more a matter of the nature and character of those events and circumstances.
Despite the apparent confusion, ignorance and misunderstanding surrounding the use and meaning of the word, stress presents a very real danger to both individuals and organisations alike. For example:
-
Employee health and well-being is impaired and diminishes
-
Job satisfaction and commitment to the organisation decline
-
Interpersonal relationships deteriorate
-
‘Good citizenship’ behaviours are less likely to be demonstrated
-
Absence increases
There is a real and serious need, therefore, to tackle stress at work, but resources are wasted if any action is not underpinned by sound knowledge and scientific theory. Not theory for theory’s sake, but theory to help elucidate and understand, to help make certain, as far as is possible, that any ‘prescriptions’ for action are built upon and derive from sound and accurate ‘diagnosis’.
At Zeal we work closley with our clients to help them better manage and prevent the impact of stress on their performance and health. We offer a range of Stress Management services that have been extensively evaluated and are legally defensible.
